CDM attend GBV symposium

The programmes of Gender Based Violence are at the core of discussions at the National Department of Social Development Violence Against Women and children research symposium.

 Capricorn District Municipality is attending the two days symposium held on 01 and 02 March 2018 at Manhattan Hotel in Pretoria. The symposium that commenced today is facilitated by the department and is giving researchers a platform to share the outcome of Gender Based Violence in our country with specific reference to the following topics:

1. Domestic violence and intimate partner violence among LGBTIQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Intersex) people.

2. Housing women who have experienced abuse: policy, funding & practice. The Psychological-Social factors contributing to economically independent women staying in abusive relationships.

3. Harnessing the power of SA partnerships to develop capacity for prevention of violence against women.

4. Human Trafficking , Sex Work and Violence – exploring the complexities.

 Officially opening the symposium the Deputy Minister of Social Development, Ms Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu raised concerns that need attention from society which are happening on daily basis. She highlighted the challenges faced on daily basis experienced by women in relation to how mothers-in-law handle their daughters-in-laws (Makoti), how families handle our widows, support given to our child mothers, how breast cancer contribute to violence, HIV/AIDS positive women likeliness to suffer from cervical cancer, HIV/AIDS should not be separated from gender based violence and to bring men on board not as perpetrators but as partners. The symposium is expected to be filled with debates and deliberations as shared by the researchers.
