Capricorn District Municipality host special schools youth month commemoration

The uncontrollable sound of a drum like a horn calling people, the rhythm driving people to let go of their inner cords allowing the beat to release the inward peace. This is how the special schools youth month commemoration celebration at Helen Franz can be summarised. The melodic sounds of Setotolwane Choir and silent moves of Setotolwane deaf choir left the leadership delegation led by Acting Executive Mayor for Capricorn District Municipality MMC Jara Masubelele speechless yet humbly moved.

The celebration that also included career exhibitions and presentations from University of Limpopo and University of South Africa was part of the Capricorn District Municipality was part of the district wide youth month celebration. The celebration was aimed at educating the learners and affording them an opportunity to learn about the struggles of the past as part of the South African history. “We teach you about the struggles of 1976 so that you as the youth of today can take charge of your future and become progressive leaders of tomorrow. We have better opportunities today than those who came before us,” said Cllr Masubelele speaking to the learners.

“It is imperative that you know the importance of education and how it empowers. We can never stop emphasising the importance of education. There are opportunities and you need to make use of them. This is one community that has not been given more attention. As a result we need to take charge and play our role to ensure they get exposed. I commit that through our office we will engage the National Youth Development agency (NYDA), to ensure that they come to our district to speak to youth with disability”.

“To us as government, we do not see you as disabled people but we see you as young South Africans that need to be supported in order to advance in life. We celebrate this year under the theme, the year of OR Tambo: Advancing Youth Economic Empowerment.  OR Tambo was a leader that believed in education and investing in young people. As a leadership we need to support and ensure that this vision is attained”.

Motivational speaker Tebogo Maponya said that all people in the world have their own disability. “There are no people with disability but people with diversity. We are different and this makes the world a better place to be. We can never be the same hence life is nice and beautiful. In your own diversity you occupy a space in life. Wake up,  challenge the world and make a difference”.
