“By-laws help us to assess progress on the operations and maintenance of water schemes,” said Cllr Maite Mohale Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for Infrastructure. She alluded that on Water and Sanitation By-law, CDM is tackling two major challenges: theft and vandalism of water infrastructure, and the strain of rapid population growth on water resources. To address these issues, CDM has partnered with the South African Police Services (SAPS) to increase security and visibility.
The By-laws public consultation is a program led by the office of the Speaker Cllr Kholofelo Lehong. More consultation sessions will be held with various stakeholders. Additionally, councilors are leading awareness campaigns to educate communities about the dangers of vandalising water infrastructure. Rapid Population Growth is one other challenge the municipality faces which is putting pressure on water resources, prompting the need for increased Operations and Maintenance budget allocations.
The CDM Standard Draft By-law for Township Economies and Public Private Partnership for Development and Management of Tourism Opportunities at Motumo Trading Post were also presented for inputs and comments. The consultation session was held on 18 February 2025.
