Over two-hundred men from all over Capricorn District took part in the 100Men March which took place on 17 August 2018 in Polokwane.
As part of the centenary celebrations of former President Nelson Mandela and struggle stalwart Mama Albertina Sisulu, government and various social partners are this year hosting a national #100MenMarch to stop violence against women and children. Both these stalwarts committed their lives to the fight for the human rights particularly women and children. The march in part celebrates their lives but also seeks to raise awareness on the scourge of violence against women and children.
The march draws at least 100 men from various sectors of society, such as government, business, labour, faith-based organisations, non-profit and media organisations to stop the abuse of women and children. Similar marches have been held throughout the country and at national level. These various formations have in the spirit of #ThumaMina heeded the call by President Cyril Ramaphosa that all citizens should take a stand to stop violence against women and children.
Government has called on all men to join the #100MenMarch and boldly declare that violence against women and children will not be tolerated in their respective environment or communities. The #100MenMarch is a motivating force to ensure that men break the chain of abuse.
Speaking during the formal part of the event, Acting Executive Mayor for Capricorn District Municipality, Cllr. Monica Mohale, called on all men in the district to make it their responsibility that women and children in the society are protected and not subjected to violence and abuse. A pledge to commit to the protection of women and children was signed by all the men who took part in the march, which was then handed over to Cllr. Mohale.
