Four schools from across the district took part in the Capricorn District Road Safety Awareness Campaign on 18 August 2018. Presentations for the competition took place at CDM’s council chamber.
The project is aimed at instilling a spirit of road safety amongst school children and road users in the district. Learners from Grade 10 and 11 are chosen to take part in the competition and it is mainly learners from schools situated on high accident zone and also with high accident statistics. These learners are then given two months to do research and prepare for the competition.
The different stages of the competition are municipal/circuit level, regional/district level, provincial level and then national level. Solutions proposed by the winning school at national level gets included in the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) community project.
The competition entails aspects of participatory education techniques, road safety debate and driver of the year. The winners in the competition are; 1st – Chita Kekana secondary School, 2nd – SJ Van der Merwe Secondary School, 3rd – Boikhutsong Secondary School, 4th – Ditlalemoso Secondary School, best speaker – K. Kekana from Chita Kekana from Chita Kekana Secondary School, and best model – SJ Van der Merwe Secondary School. The winners were given cellular tablets, trophies, calculators and dictionaries.
