The Executive Mayor, Cllr Mamedupi Teffo, today honoured the winners of the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) School Competition during an awards ceremony held on 04 June 2026 at Nirvana Hall in Polokwane.
The competition, held under the theme “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters”, seeks to promote disaster awareness, preparedness, and safety among learners across the district while empowering young people to become champions of disaster risk reduction.
Primary Schools Category
1. Nkgoso Primary School (Lepelle-Nkumpi) – R20 000
2. Magoshi Primary School (Molemole) – R15 000
3. Mokopela Primary School (Blouberg) – R10 000
4. Maribe Primary School (Polokwane) – R5 000
Secondary Schools Category
1. Fedile Secondary School (Molemole) – R20 000
2. Kgolouthwane Secondary School (Blouberg) – R15 000
3. Piet N. Aphane Secondary School (Lepelle-Nkumpi) – R10 000
4. Tshukutwe Secondary School (Polokwane) – R5 000
In addition to cash prizes, the winning schools received essential safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, fire blankets, first aid kits and thermometers, as well as accredited First Aid and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) training for educators.
Addressing the ceremony, Executive Mayor Cllr Mamedupi Teffo emphasized that disaster risk reduction remains a strategic priority for Capricorn District Municipality.
“Today is not merely a competition; it is an investment in the future generation of leaders, innovators and disaster risk champions who will help our communities prepare for and respond effectively to disasters and emergencies,” she said.
The Mayor further highlighted the importance of empowering learners through education, awareness programmes and early warning systems to build safer and more resilient communities.
The municipality congratulates all participating schools for their commitment and encourages learners to continue playing an active role in promoting disaster preparedness and community resilience.
