CDM hands over disaster relief materials to destitute families

Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) handed over food parcels, mattresses and blankets to three destitute families in their closing event of Mandela Month on Monday. Two families from Blouberg and one family from Aganang were visited in coordination with the local municipalities.

At Taaibosch in Blouberg, the entourage led by Calvin Masoga, CDM Chief Whip, visited a child headed family cared for by Johanna Maropeng, the eldest of the children. The family consists of eight orphans who live in a shack after their house was demolished by a natural disaster. Also present were Donald Ratladi, acting Mayor of Blouberg, Derrick Seduma, Blouberg Chief Whip, Gilbert Maleboho, CDM councillor and Thoka Kgoale, Blouberg Municipal Manager. The recipients were extremely grateful for the food parcels and bedding and immediately started to position everything in their crowded shack.

The party then proceeded to Lekgokgonong Village, where a pensioner, Ntlela Philip Mpya, a victim of a disaster that occurred in 2001, was visited. Mpya told the visitors that his wife and children are no longer staying with him, they are with relatives and he is now staying alone in this shack.

In Aganang, the municipality visited the Ledwaba family for a handover. Cllr Joel Moropa of CDM told the family that CDM believes the family “deserves some welfare assistance so they can have a better life. Ms Elizabeth Ledwaba, the beneficiary in a family of six, thanked the municipality and believed that the material would make difference in her household.

According to Jabu Masondo, Communications Officer of CDM, the municipality has submitted the names of the families to the Department of Cooperative Governance, Housing Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) and requested that they be provided with RDP houses as soon as possible. “CDM would also like to plead with our sister department that the situation is appalling. It is not a conducive environment for people to live in and we request Coghsta to fast track the process of giving these families houses. CDM did this as part of closing up Mandela Month. These essentials will help in rekindling the livelihood of households after disaster befell their families recently,” Masoga the Chief Whip said
