The visit was led by the newly appointed Limpopo-based Commander, Colonel Adv. Eric Baloyi, who Captain (SAN) Solly Mashego accompanied. The purpose of the engagement was to formally introduce the new leadership of the SANDF in the province and to strengthen collaboration with local government as part of the military’s strategic objectives.
Colonel Baloyi, who also holds a legal qualification, explained that the SANDF seeks to build relationships with key stakeholders to ensure seamless coordination during emergencies and security interventions.
“It is important that we interact with local municipalities so we know where to locate each other in times of need,” he said.
The Executive Mayor welcomed the delegation warmly and expressed her excitement about the visit. She took the opportunity to outline the various roles and functions of sector departments, local municipalities, and intergovernmental forums under the District Development Model (DDM).
Cllr Mamedupi Teffo emphasized the importance of partnership, stating:
“Collaboration between CDM and the Military on infrastructure monitoring and maintenance is vital, and we will explore working together on services that directly benefit our communities.”
She also encouraged deeper cooperation between the military and local government in promoting stability and development.
An important highlight of the visit was the proposal for the SANDF to be granted the Freedom of the City, a symbolic recognition that allows the military to march through the city with flags flying and drums beating. The matter will be communicated to the Polokwane Municipality as part of the Intergovernmental Relations (IGR) agenda.
In a significant announcement, Colonel Baloyi hinted that the prestigious National Army Day may soon return to Polokwane, a move that would boost the city’s national profile and bring major socio-economic benefits to the province.
The visit marks a new chapter in military and municipal relations, reaffirming the importance of unity and coordination across spheres of government in service of the people.
