The spirit of commitment, resistance, and intellectual clarity was deeply felt at the University of Limpopo during the 2nd Lawrence Phokanoka Annual Memorial Lecture held on 20 July 2025 at University of Limpopo in Turfloop. This gathering honoured the life and legacy of one of South Africa’s unsung heroes.Held under the auspices of the Lawrence Phokanoka Foundation, the event drew together scholars, political leaders, activists, and community members united in their shared commitment to the values Phokanoka espoused.
Executive Mayor of Capricorn District Municipality, Cllr. Mamedupi Teffo, delivered the Vote of Thanks, expressing heartfelt appreciation to all who contributed to the success of the lecture. In her remarks, she acknowledged the significance of the gathering as more than just a tribute it was a reaffirmation of revolutionary principles and a call to turn memory into action.
The event commenced with a spiritual invocation by Reverend Avezwane Ramakauela, setting a reflective and solemn tone. Professor Mahlo Mokgalong, Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Limpopo, extended a warm welcome, offering the institution as a fitting space for such critical dialogue.
Polokwane Municipality was represented by MMC for sport, Cllr Kolobe, who underscored the enduring relevance of Phokanoka’s ideals in today’s society. Comrades from COSATU and the SACP, including Comrade Mike “Skoikie” Makgoba, and the ANC, represented by Dr. Phophi Ramathuba who attended virtually, reinforced the unity and resilience required to sustain the vision Phokanoka lived for.
Special gratitude was extended to Mr. George Masamba for his civic reflections and to Comrade Mavuso Msimang, the Patron of the Foundation, whose remarks challenged the audience to transform remembrance into tangible societal change.
The highlight of the day was a powerful keynote address by Joel Netshitenzhe, whose analytical exploration of theory and praxis in today’s political environment deeply resonated with the audience. His words served not only as a tribute but as a challenge to all present to respond to contemporary challenges with ideological discipline and historical consciousness.
Also recognised were ANC NEC Member Dr. Polly Boshielo, who introduced the keynote speaker with clarity and reverence, and the Phokanoka family representative, who added a personal and emotional dimension to the hero’s legacy.
Executive Mayor Teffo concluded her address by thanking Programme Director Leshaba Rampedi for his effective facilitation.
