Department of Water and Sanitation Minister, Senzo Mchunu led a delegation including the Deputy Ministers David Mahlobo and Judith Tshabalala, CDM Executive Mayor Cllr. Maite Mohale, Lepelle-Nkumpi Municipality Mayor Cllr. Meriam Molala and other officials on a Ministerial Oversight visit at the Olifantspoort and Ebenezer Water Supply Scheme in Lebowakgomo under Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality within the Capricorn District Municipality. The visit took place on 25 April 2024.
Minister Senzo Mchunu and the delegation visited the Olifantspoort and Ebenezer Water Supply Scheme Refurbishment and Upgrade Project at Lebowakgomo. The project is meant to increase water provision to more than 370,000 households around both Lepelle-Nkumpi and Polokwane Municipalities. The bulk water infrastructure projects will see the upgrading of old water infrastructure, to help minimize pipeline bursts and ensure uninterrupted pump station operations.
The project is implemented by the Department of Water and Sanitation’s entity, Lepelle Northern Water, and is expected to create over a thousand jobs during the construction phase, and a further ninety jobs upon completion of the project.
The visit ended with a community imbizo held at Lebowakgomo Zone S Phase 3. During an engagement with the community, Minister Mchunu took the community through the details of the project and indicated that the government understands the water challenges faced by communities, and this will bring the much needed relief as water is life. He further urged the community to work together with the contractors, and avoid project disruptions.
CDM Executive Mayor Cllr. Mamedupi Teffo also appealed for patience from the community as the government attends to water challenges. She also indicated that the municipality has recently filled key positions in infrastructure, that will ensure that people of the district get water.
