A MILESTONE OF FREEDOM CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED

Capricorn District witnessed a historic moment on 08 September 2026 as Deputy Minister in The Presidency, Mr Kenny Morolong, lit the Torch of Freedom during the provincial launch of the #MilestonesOfFreedom campaign at the University of Limpopo, Turfloop.

The campaign forms part of an initiative to commemorate and reflect on the significant milestones that have shaped South Africa’s democratic journey since 1994, while encouraging communities, particularly young people, to understand, preserve and carry forward the country’s history and democratic values.

The programme provided an opportunity to reflect on the progress made over the years, the sacrifices that paved the way for freedom, and the responsibility of current and future generations to protect and strengthen South Africa’s democracy.

As part of the launch, participants took part in a historical walkabout to the iconic Fig Tree at the University of Limpopo, a significant heritage landmark that provided an opportunity to connect the country’s history with the present.

The day concluded with an intergenerational dialogue at R40 Hall, bringing together different generations to share experiences, reflect on the meaning of freedom and democracy, and engage on the role of citizens in shaping the future of South Africa.

The Torch of Freedom symbolised the journey of South Africa’s democracy and the continued commitment to ensuring that the values of freedom, equality and human dignity remain alive for generations to come.
