FOOD SAFETY CAMPAIGN IN BOTLOKWA

Through the Municipal Health Unit, Capricorn District Municipality embarked on a Food Safety Campaign at Botlokwa in Molemole Municipality on 14 November 2024. The campaign aimed to inspect compliance and other related issues emanating from environmental food safety. The inspection included checking the quality of items sold, the expiry date, and the damaged food that compromises the quality of goods that are also consumed.
“The dangerous consequences of consuming expired food from spaza shops cannot be overstated. These shops are breaking the law by selling expired food and putting the health and safety of our communities and customers at risk. The expiration date on food products is there for a reason – to indicate when the food is no longer safe for consumption. By disregarding these dates and selling expired food, these shops are knowingly exposing their customers to potential foodborne illnesses and other health hazards.,” said Municipal Health Practitioner Thabo Mogale leading the campaign.
“It is a blatant disregard for the well-being of others and action must be taken to prevent this dangerous practice hence this inspection campaign,” added Mogale. Other stakeholders who were of the campaign were South African Police Service (SAPS – Botlokwa Police Station) monitoring and assisting and Department of Home Affairs checking for proper documentation for foreign shop operators.
