The team kept the listeners informed and educated on fire safety, disaster risk reduction and municipal health. The programme runs across all seven community radio stations across the district.
What is fire season?
Fire season is a period when the conditions are conducive for wildfires to start and spread easily, primarily due to dry vegetation and high temperatures. It is the period when the risk of wildfires or veldfires is high typically during dry and hot weather conditions. In South Africa, the two main fire seasons are determined by rainfall patterns: the Western Cape experiences fire season during the hot, dry summer months, while the rest of the country faces fire season during the dry winter months.
The level of risk during fire season is determined by factors like the amount of combustible vegetation, wind strength, and weather conditions. During fire season, it’s crucial to be vigilant about fire safety and take precautions to prevent wildfires, including avoiding open fires, ensuring proper electrical wiring, and maintaining clear areas around homes.
