Capricorn District Municipality urges parents to prohibit children from playing near or crossing or swimming in flooded rivers and springs to prevent accidents.
This comes after a total of seven children so far drowned in the District since the start of recent disruptive rains across the District.
“Parents and guardians have a duty to look after their children and excercise care to ensure that they don’t play in areas where there is exposure to risk that could result in injury or loss of life”, says Executive Mayor Cllr John Mpe, adding that parents ought to know that failure to warn children against such dangers could result in foreseeable and preventable loss of life.
Mpe emphasized that children should rather be allowed to play where parents could be able to supervise them. “No one should lose their child to drowning if every parent remains vigilant and exercises care and supervision over children especially at time when so many rivers and springs are full from recent and ongoing rains”, he said.
Mpe sends condolences to families who lost their children to drowning. He reminds everyone to use the toll free number 0800 666 777 to report any emergency as a result of floods and other disasters.
