The event aimed at casting light on the ill treatment of the elderly, was held today at Tsherane Multi-Purpose Centre in Botlokwa, Molemole Municipality.
There were various initiatives introduced which aimed at creating awareness and providing vital information to the public on the growing number of elder abuse cases. The initiative intends to contribute to the government’s core objective of restoring to individuals their human dignity and encouraging collective participation from community members in preventing this abuse.
Various presentations unpacked what elder abuse means and that it goes beyond physical abuse. It can take a form of emotional or sexual abuse, financial exploitation, abandonment, or any inappropriate action exerted towards the elderly that can cause distress.
Addressing the elderly Cllr. Mohale spoke at length against elderly abuse. She called on those abusing the elders to stop. She said that taking care of the elderly should be an everyday thing, not just on the day of the Older Person’s Grant payment.
