Learners of Christ The King Academy at Mankweng were attending a teenage pregnancy and substance and drug abuse and HIV/Aids awareness outreach at the school. The outreach hosted by the school was organised with the involvement of CDM Special Focus unit together with a Non-governmental Organisation called Bowel of Mercy Community Development and Projects. The NGO was based in Seshego and also deals with amongst other things counselling, fund raising, project development, entrepreneurship development and training.
About 100 learners from grade 7 to 9 attended the session. Similar outreach programmes were hosted by other NGOs from around the area, where they teach the learners about health awareness. According to the school Principal Alex Sethemane, the school has challenges with drug and substance abuse amongst grade 9 and 10 learners. Sethemane said, “we hope this will help the learners to see the danger of these things and the negative effects that this will have in their late stages of life”.
Similar outreach programmes will be hosted during the month of September in Seshego targeting FET students.
