The Capricorn District Municipality’s Municipal Health Services (MHS), in partnership with Blouberg Local Municipality and key stakeholders, successfully commemorated World Food Safety Day on 10 June 2026 at Senwabarwana Stalls.
The event forms part of the global awareness campaign led by the World Health Organization, under the theme “From Burden to Solutions – Safe Food Everywhere,” aimed at promoting safe food handling practices and protecting public health.
The programme brought together Municipal Health Services, Fire Services, Local Economic Development, and Environmental Management teams to engage directly with food vendors. The focus was on educating food handlers on hygiene standards, fire safety, waste management, and compliance with trading regulations, while also assisting vendors with applications for Certificates of Acceptability (COA).
During the inspections, key challenges were identified, including improper storage and handling of LPG gas cylinders, which poses a serious fire safety risk, as well as a significant number of vendors operating without valid municipal trading permits.
Follow-up inspections are planned for July 2026 to ensure compliance and address identified gaps. Fire Services will also conduct targeted fire safety training for hawkers. The Municipality extends appreciation to all stakeholders and vendors for their participation in strengthening food safety and safeguarding community health.
