DCC welcomes reopening of the schools

The Capricorn District Command Council has welcomed the re-opening of schools this week amid much anxiety of parents and expressed hope for a smooth, safer school term for all educators and learners.

In its weekly meeting on Tuesday 25 August, the DCC stated that it was encouraged by the rate of Covid-19 recoveries and the flattening of the curve as learners return to schools.

The DCC also reflected on the general behavior of people since the easing of lockdown to level 2 a week ago and expressed a concern about the over-excitement and carefree behaviour, which, if not kept in check, may lead to the resurgence of infections.

The DCC stated that level 2 means coronavirus is still very much here and reminded residents not to drop their guard and rather continue taking precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones. This means that funerals should continue observing restrictions by only permitting 50 mourners and discouraging after-tears gatherings.

The DCC cautioned that the permitted sale of alcohol should not undo the gains and strides made to avoid the country being a fertile ground for the virus. Drinkers therefore still have the responsibility to rather drink at home and avoid unnecessary social gatherings and movements, especially those who are motorists. “Life is not back to normal yet and people should not be over-excited about the lifting of some restrictions”, warns the DCC chairperson, Cllr John Mpe.

Mpe said the DCC will continue rolling out awareness campaigns to remind everyone about safety precautions.
