βThere is lot of progress that has been made with regard to women in governanceβ said Acting Executive Mayor of CDM Cllr Betty Kgare addressing the District Womenβs Parliament held at Bolivia Lodge in Polokwane. Kgare addedΒ βItβs important when we teach a girl child we donβt leave the boy child behindβ.
The parliament held under the theme βGeneration equality, Realizing womenβs rights for an Equal Futureβ, elected amongst the participants Honourable Cllr Mavis Mashuene as the Speaker.
βCovid-19 is the second pandemic with Gender Based Violence being the firstβ, said Cllr Koketso Mogashoa presenting on the motion, βIncreasing incidents of GBV during lockdown and beyond and how to prevent it. Cllr Mokoena added that, βwith the violation of rights being experienced by women daily, we need 24 hours court services to ensure the justice system is available to tackle the cases of GBV.
The participants argued that the lockdown has exposed the advent of poverty in households and high unemployment. They emphasized, even in this difficult situation, everyone has the right to life and that constitutional right that must be respected.
Speaking on the motion, Water Supply challenges and its impact on Women in rural villages within the District. Cllr Precious Mamabolo said, βthere were water projects that are beingΒ implemented every year but there isΒ infrastructure vandalism that delays water provision. The impact of this is huge on women as they are forced push wheelbarrows to fetch water from far. There is a need to also consider water projects with household connectionsβ.
βWater shortage affect our livelihood especially because we are unable to work on some of the projects that will enable us to put food on the table such as home gardening and Farmingβ, said Cllr Mathipa.
They argued that although there were visible progress on some of the projects being implementated, there was still more to be done.

The participants at the parliament were representatives of political parties serving in CDM Council. The parliament was held under strick Covid-19 Protocols.
