CDM hold 2020 women’s parliament

“There is lot of progress that has been made with regard to women in governance” said Acting Executive Mayor of CDM Cllr Betty Kgare addressing the District Women’s Parliament held at Bolivia Lodge in Polokwane. Kgare added  “It’s important when we teach a girl child we don’t leave the boy child behind”.

The parliament held under the theme ‘Generation equality, Realizing women’s rights for an Equal Future’, elected amongst the participants Honourable Cllr Mavis Mashuene as the Speaker.

“Covid-19 is the second pandemic with Gender Based Violence being the first”, said Cllr Koketso Mogashoa presenting on the motion, ‘Increasing incidents of GBV during lockdown and beyond and how to prevent it. Cllr Mokoena added that, “with the violation of rights being experienced by women daily, we need 24 hours court services to ensure the justice system is available to tackle the cases of GBV.

The participants argued that the lockdown has exposed the advent of poverty in households and high unemployment. They emphasized, even in this difficult situation, everyone has the right to life and that constitutional right that must be respected.

Speaking on the motion, Water Supply challenges and its impact on Women in rural villages within the District. Cllr Precious Mamabolo said, “there were water projects that are being  implemented every year but there is  infrastructure vandalism that delays water provision. The impact of this is huge on women as they are forced push wheelbarrows to fetch water from far. There is a need to also consider water projects with household connections”.

“Water shortage affect our livelihood especially because we are unable to work on some of the projects that will enable us to put food on the table such as home gardening and Farming”, said Cllr Mathipa.

They argued that although there were visible progress on some of the projects being implementated, there was still more to be done.

The Speaker of CDM Cllr Monicca Mohale appreciated level of commitment shown by all participant. You are the future leaders who will serve in various councils and we are proud of how you handled the parliament. “Your arguments have been backed by facts and that shows you were well prepared and you did thorough research on the motions. Your future looks bright”, added Speaker of Blouberg Cllr Maria Thamaga.

The participants at the parliament were representatives of political parties serving in CDM Council. The parliament was held under strick Covid-19 Protocols.
