The trees were donated by the Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism as part of reforestation efforts to demonstrate commitment to sustainability. The Department donated ten trees to be planted at Ga-Molapo Community Hall.
The MMC appreciated the gesture towards the commemoration of fire fighters and praised fire fighters for the sterling work they continue to do by putting their lives at risk to save others. This happened as they recited an emotional fireman’s prayer.
The day was filled with activities from various stakeholders who are imperative in the Community Safety Environment and also presented on various topics. The MMC was joined by the representatives of the traditional leaders at Ga-Molapo, other councillors and members of the community.
The trees planted are called Harpephyllum Caffrum (Motshidi in Sepedi). Harpephyllum caffrum is a fairly hardy, large evergreen tree. It has attractive dark foliage with the odd red leaf in the crown. The small yellowish-green flowers are borne in terminal sprays from October to February. Male and female flowers are on separate trees, therefore only female plants bear fruitFleshy red berries follow the flowers and attract many fruit eating birds to the garden. The fruits and the kernels are edible and a delicious jelly can be made from the pulp. This is a beautifully shaped tree for gardens and makes a wonderful street tree. The bark is used for medicinal purposes and the wood used for furniture.
