CDM hosted its 2021 youth parliament at Nirvana Hall in Polokwane on 10 June 2021. The parliament was attended by youth from across the district as per the political parties represented in CDM’s Council. The municipality host this event every year during the youth month (June), to give the youth of the district a platform to share their comments and inputs on how youth issues can be dealt with and how the youth can play a role in this.
Issues discussed during the parliament are, Access to technology (network connectivity) remains one of the major problems towards achieving goal of 4th industrial revolution to youth in municipalities,Skills development among youth and lack of support to SMME initiatives remain one of the challenges which contributes to high unemployment in the district (Role of NYDA and LEDA), Incidents of gender based violence and femicide continue to increase despite measures put in place to deal with these social ills, Representation of youth in local government structures in particular at political leadership.
The parliament was also attended by CDM’s Speaker Cllr. Monica Mohale, Member of Mayoral Committee for Strategic Executive Management Services Cllr. Jara Masubelele, Speaker of Polokwane Municipality Cllr. Mariri Ralefatane, National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), Local Economic Development Agency (LEDA), Commission on Gender Equality and Office of the Premier.
Young people recommended that CDM, the NYDA, and Office of the Premier should put more effort in supporting SMMEs established by the youth, there should be sign language interpreters in all government institutions including municipalities, and there should be more use of the voice of the youth on issues of gender based violence. The next youth parliament will be hosted around same month in 2022.
