2018 DISTRICT WATER SUMMIT

CDM hosted the District Water Summit in Polokwane on the 31st July to provide a platform for the district to source inputs from various stakeholders on how to tackle water and sanitation challenges in the district.

“As CDM we need to ensure that water is a catalyst for our socio-economic development. It is therefore a priority for us as per the 2040 Growth and Development Strategy to ensure security of our water so that we are able to balance the social needs of our people, especially those who have been denied access to water in the past,” said Cllr. Edward Paya, who was speaking on behalf of CDM Executive Mayor Cllr. John Mpe.

Cllr Paya further said that water has played a prominent role in establishing the principles of equality, dignity and equity, the right to safe and healthy living, the right to food and jobs and an unqualified opportunity to develop our human and economic assests, which it is hoped this summit will help carve strategies of achieving this.

The summit also discussed issues such as; provision of bulk infrastructure (domestic, agriculture, industries etc.), water and sanitation provision to rural households, and waste water treatment works. Among the issues to be presented on are; the status of water and sanitation in the district and in Polokwane Municipality, provision of bulk infrastructure, and water resources and services management action plan.

The one day summit was attended by Councillors, officials from sector departments and municipalities, other stakeholders in the water sector and members of the media.
