“Fire fighters play a crucial role in the community in saving lives during catastrophic events. This is the time when the world recognizes the remarkable work and sacrifices that these men and women make to ensure that communities and the environment are safe,” said Cllr Elizabeth Rahlana, Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for Community Services during the International Fire Fighters Day held on 16 May 2024.
The municipality commemorated International Fire Fighters Day in the different local municipalities of the district on the same date. In Lepelle-Nkumpi Municipality, the day was commemorated at Mahlatjane Community Hall, Molemole Municipality at Morebeng Community Hall, while Blouberg Municipality held theirs at Maupye Primary School. Members of the community were educated about how they should respond when disaster strikes, how to report these incidents, etc. Learners from Mahlatjane Primary School also displayed their knowledge about fire safety.
The IFFD programme has been spearheaded by MMC for Community Services, Cllr Elizabeth Rahlana. The commemoration was attended by the Traditional Authority, South African Police Service (SAPS), Department of Correctional Services, Victim Empowerment, Disaster Management, Municipal Health Services. The purpose of day commemoration was to honour the efforts of the fallen victims of fire and the rescue team across the country who have lost their lives in line of duty and also to teach them how to prevent and protect themselves from fire breakages. Stakeholders made presentations on safety measures that help to reduce the risk of fire rages.
