DISASTER SCHOOL DEBATE COMPETITION 2024

The Capricorn District Municipality hosted the District Disaster Risk Management School Competition at Landmark Lodge, just outside Polokwane. The competition that took place on 16 May 2024 was held under the theme, ” Early Warning System”. Learners from four Secondary Schools and four Primary Schools around the district were allowed to present their ideas on identified disaster hazards in their schools and then propose early warning systems on how these can be mitigated.

Each school was represented by a team of five people. The adjudicators in the competition were from  Limpopo Provincial Disaster Management, the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement, South African Weather Services, Limpopo Department of Education, and CDM.

One Grade 10 Learner, Oratile Moloto from Seiphi High School at Ga-Mochemi, in Blouberg Municipality said, “I had a nice experience as I now know a lot about hazardous material. Presenting in front of the judges was petrifying but exciting at the same time”.

The main sponsors of the event was SANTAM and Protea Hotel/Landmark Lodge. Results of the competition will be announced during an award handing over ceremony to be held on 21 May 2024 at Meropa Casino in Polokwane.
