“Disaster Management is everybody’s business. The solution to dealing with disasters and preventative measures comes from all people working together as a collective. Everyone has a role to play”, said Lebo Mosotho from CDM Disaster Management.
These were sentiments shared by presenters at the Disaster Risk Management workshop themed “floods awareness campaign” held at Flora Village in Molemole Local Municipality on 16 November 2021.
Flora Village is situated in a low lying area in the flood line and for years has been experienced floods which remains a thorn to the community. Historically the area, because of its location, has been good for farming but as years went by the floods have negatively affected that with people leaving their farms due to high levels of water that killed their crops. This was outlined by Titus Maeta from the local traditional authority sharing indigenous knowledge of the area.
The presentations delivered were tailor made to respond in line with the disaster risks assessments that were previously done in the area. The presentations were from African Weather Services, South African National Space Agency, Department of Public Works, Molemole Municipality Technical Services, CDM Spatial Planning, Water Services, Municipal Health and Fire Services.
