Ga-Mampa is situated in a wetland area

Ga-Mampa is situated in a wetland area. From afar, a breathtaking view showing off the beauty of nature with Mohlapitsi river running through the village with lots of farms on the other side.

The area has experienced heavy flooding in rainy seasons causing numerous disasters incidents. The CDM disaster management as a result, organized a Disaster Risk Management workshop themed ” Floods awareness campaign”, in order to educate the community about disaster management and related issues. The workshop was held at Ga-Mampa Village in Mafefe under Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality.

Disasters causes the land to become unsuitable for human settlement. “As Spatial Planning, we have a critical role to play in ensuring land is properly used and demarcated. This area is a wetland, as such there is limited space for human settlement”, said Mahlaku Mojapelo from CDM Spatial Planning.

She continued that, “If there is a need to expand the village, the traditional authority must write a letter to request for the municipality to assist with demarcation of sites. The community must not allow informal settlements and illegal occupation along the river side because it leads to even more damage”.

The awareness campaign included presentations from various departments relevant to disaster risk reduction namely the South African Weather Service outlined, South African National Space Agency, CDM Municipal Health Services, Disaster Management, Fire Services and Spatial Planning. #PREPAREACTSURVIVE
