CDM participated in the SALGA Communicators Forum & Stakeholder engagement

Capricorn District Municipality participated in the South African Local Government Association Municipal Communicators’ Forum & Stakeholder Engagement Session that took place at Peter Mokaba stadium on 24 July 2017. The session was aimed at giving communicators in the province a platform to share ideas on issues pertaining to local government. This happened a day before national Salga communicators forum held in Durban on 25 and 26 July.

Issues discussed was the high data cost in South Africa and the importance of belonging to a professional body. In South Africa for 1Gb of data users pay, R160 for MTN, R149 for Vodacom, aR99 for Telkom and R149 for Cell C. Data packages were under the Tarific spotlight where a comparison was made amongst the BRICS countries . Data prices for South Africa were found to be on average 134% more expensive than the cheapest prices in the group.

According to the Acting Chairperson of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa’s Acting Chairperson, Reuben Mohlaloga, data consumption in SA is high, on average consumers use 800 megabytes per month.

Speaking during the session, Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa (PRISA) President-elect Malesela Maubane emphasised the importance of belonging to a professional body. It is important that the way public relations professionals conduct themselves is regulated. “There must be some level of accountability and professionalism in the way Public Relations professionals conduct themselves within the profession.
