On 17 August 2026, the National Department of Health officially launched the Integrated Health Screening Programme in Mafefe Village, marking an important step towards addressing the long-term health risks associated with asbestos exposure in the community.
Mafefe had faced health risks linked to abandoned asbestos mines, with communities exposed to asbestos fibres and concerns around contaminated soil and water.
MMC for Development Planning and Environmental Management Services Cllr Makgato Machaba joined Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi and Limpopo MEC for Health Dieketseng Mashego at the official launch.
The programme provided community members, including former mine workers and potentially affected residents, with access to health screening aimed at promoting the early detection of asbestos-related diseases and other health conditions.
The initiative also supported appropriate referrals, follow-up care and access to healthcare services for those requiring further medical attention.
The launch reaffirmed government’s commitment to bringing healthcare services closer to affected communities and strengthening efforts towards early detection, improved healthcare access and better health outcomes.
