TWO TODDLERS PASS ON AFTER ALLEGEDLY EATING LEAVES FROM A TREE.

Most of our households have this tree as a flower. It is called Cascabela Thevetia. This beautiful flowering plant, also known as Yellow Oleander, is popular for its vibrant yellow flowers that bloom all year round. The Cascabela Thevetia tree is native to tropical and subtropical regions and is found in many of our villages. It is toxic and dangerous.
Two two-year-old toddlers from Mokgoto Village, Zebediela in Lepelle-Nkumpi Municipality have passed on, after consuming leaves from a Cascabela Thevetia tree, commonly known as Yellow Oleander.
Katlego Machaba (2), and Koketso Kekana (2),were amongst five children between the ages of 1 to 5, said to have been playing “Malapana” outside one of the bereaved families home, when they consumed the deadly leaves. The incident happened on 17 January 2025.
The two children are said to have later shown signs of not being well, presenting symptoms such as vomiting, sweating and running stomach. One child was taken to Mokgoto Clinic, where he was certified dead. While the 2nd child was taken to Zebediela Hospital where he passed on.
The other three children from the two affected families, were later taken to hospital for observation at Zebediela Hospital, and have since been discharged.
What is Cascabela.
Its bright yellow flowers not only add a pop of color to any garden or household, but also attract pollinating insects and birds, making it a valuable part of the ecosystem.
However, despite its beauty, the Cascabela Thevetia tree is highly toxic if ingested and should be handled with caution. Despite this, many households continue to grow and admire this stunning tree for its aesthetic appeal. With proper care and maintenance, this flower can thrive in both indoor and outdoor settings, making it a popular choice for households all over the world.
Whether it’s used for decoration or just to appreciate its natural beauty, the Cascabela Thevetia tree has become an integral part of many households and will continue to be admired for generations to come.
We urge our communities not to allow children to play under this tree or consume its fruits or leaves.
