“IT’S NOT A VOLCANO: NO NEED TO FEAR, IT’S NOT BURNING.

The CDM team was at Ratsaka Village in Molemole Municipality, to allay fears from residents of the area following last years underground peat fire. CDM is fully dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
The aim of the visit was to bring awareness and update the community about the underground fire incident at the Ratsaka Village.
A suspected underground peat fire was reported in October 2024, at a wetland area in the village. The fire had been smoldering for weeks, with communities believing it was a volcano. Authorities investigated, suspecting a veld fire ignited an underground peat, but the exact cause was unknown.
It’s important for our traditional authorities not to allocate residential stands or allow any agricultural activities to take place at the area, and keep the area conserved.
Presentations made unpacked topics such as Climate Change, Wetland Management, Environmental Management status quo, Environmental compliance, Land use Management and GIS, Illegal Sand Mining, Municipal Health Services as well as Disaster Management and Fire Department.

Since the incident, our experts have been monitoring the situation closely, conducting regular checks, and implementing effective measures to prevent further risks. The awareness took place on 06 March 2025.
