THOUSANDS of households across Capricorn District were left devastated on Wednesday evening after heavy rains, strong winds, hail and thunderstorms damaged properties, blew roofs off and left the families in dire need of shelter and household necessities.
In Blouberg, the number of affected households at Sekhubo is 02, Tikiline/ Springfield is 10, and the following roads were badly affected – Mashosho D3278, Bergendal D3270 and Tikiline D3277. The Department of Public Works was informed and is attending to the matter. In Lepelle-Nkumpi, the number affected households is 14 houses at Ga-Molapo, 20 at Mogoto, 5 at Mshongoville, and 2 at Mathibela. In Polokwane, about 89 houses in Seshego were damaged and assessment continues.
Disaster management officers were dispatched to assess the extent of damage and offer relief. CDM provided families with makeshift tents, salvage sheets and blankets to reduce the effects of disaster and some were referred to SASSA for the provision of food parcels. CDM will continue to monitor the affected households until their welfare and livelihoods are rekindled. The municipality is also working with all its local municipalities to stay on high alert and respond promptly.
