On 18 September 2026, Capricorn District Municipality, through its Municipal Health Services Unit, led a food safety joint operation in Vlakfontein and Tibane in Ga-Matlala, under Polokwane Local Municipality, to promote compliance with public health and food safety regulations.
The operation was led by the Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for Community Services, Cllr Elizabeth Rahlana, and brought together key stakeholders, including the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET), Department of Home Affairs Immigration Office, South African Police Service (SAPS), Municipal Health Services and Disaster Management.
The joint operation focused on inspecting and monitoring food premises, promoting compliance with applicable legislation and identifying potential public health and environmental health risks. These interventions are important in helping to prevent foodborne illnesses, promote safe food-handling practices and protect the health and wellbeing of communities.
The collaborative approach also demonstrated the importance of coordinated enforcement and public health interventions, with different government departments and law-enforcement agencies working together to address risks and promote compliance.
Cllr Rahlana commended the participating stakeholders for their commitment and contribution to the operation, stating: “We thank you for the good work you did today.”
