CDM EXECUTIVE MAYOR HANDS OVER R47 MILLION WATER PROJECT AT GA-KIBI

Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) Executive Mayor, Cllr. Mamedupi Teffo, officially handed over the site for a new water infrastructure project at Ga-Kibi on 7 October 2026, marking another step towards improving access to reliable water services for communities in Grootpan, Sias, Longden and Ramaswikana.

Valued at more than R47 million, the Rural Water Supply (RWS) Phase 3 project is aimed at strengthening water infrastructure and addressing the water supply needs of the affected communities. Construction was scheduled to commence on 7 October 2026, with completion expected by 8 July 2027.

The scope of work includes the construction of a 200-kilolitre commanding reservoir, a 500-kilolitre raw water reservoir, a packaged water treatment plant, medium-pressure pipelines, fencing, access roads and associated structures. The project also includes equipping three boreholes and installing stormwater infrastructure to support the effective operation and protection of the water facilities.

The new infrastructure is expected to strengthen the water supply system by improving water storage, treatment and distribution capacity. Once completed and operational, the facilities will contribute towards more reliable access to water for households in the beneficiary communities.

Access to safe and reliable water is essential for public health, household hygiene, sanitation, livelihoods and socio-economic development. Improved water infrastructure can also reduce the burden on residents who experience difficulties accessing water, while supporting more sustainable community development.

The project forms part of Capricorn District Municipality’s broader efforts to improve water service delivery through infrastructure development, project monitoring and engagement with affected communities. The Municipality has continued to implement and monitor water supply initiatives across the district, including projects involving pipeline construction, reservoir refurbishment, borehole development and the installation of communal water points.

CDM’s investment in water infrastructure also highlights the importance of effective project implementation, accountability and cooperation with communities to ensure that public resources deliver their intended benefits. Continued monitoring is essential to ensure that construction meets the required standards and that completed infrastructure can provide sustainable services.

Through projects such as the Ga-Kibi Rural Water Supply Phase 3, Capricorn District Municipality continues to work towards addressing water supply challenges and improving the quality of life of residents across the district.
