Public dialogue on human rights held at Moletjie Moshate

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs under Minister Zweli Mkhize, hosted a public dialogue on the promotion and protection of human rights within traditional leadership structures and communities at Moletjie. The dialogue was held on 28 March 2019 at Moletsi Moshate in Polokwane Local Municipality.

The aim of the event was amongst others to promote a Human Rights Culture within structures of traditional leadership, traditional communities and royal families, to create awareness on the rights of vulnerable groups within traditional communities and royal families, etc.

“We are here to discuss issues around human rights & will focus on the fact that our human rights as enshrined in the constitution should be respected and taken serious. The institution of traditional leadership is the champion of human rights, women rights and the rights of children and the vulnerable, and it should be respected,” said Minister Zweli Mkhize.

The event discussed issues such as challenges faced by women and the role of women traditional leaders in promoting and protecting human rights within the institution of traditional leadership, structures of traditional leadership and traditional communities, protection and promotion of human rights within the context of traditional communities cultural practices, traditions and customs, the rights of women in structures of traditional communities and royal families, the right to practice your culture and religion within the context of the constitution (Bill of Rights).

The event was attended by the minister, Mec for Coghsta Jerry Ndou, Chairperson of the National House of Traditional Leaders Inkosi SE Mahlangu,, Chairperson of the Provincial House of Traditional Leaders Kgoshi Malesela Dikgale, and other Makgoshi.
