Sewer blockages and spillage a concern

CDM has noted with concern a growing tendency of flushing sewage-unfriendly waste such as diapers, tampons, wipes, floss and other things that clog systems and cause spillage.

The Municipality has received and resolved recurring blocked sewer and spillage cases in Senwabarwana, Blouberg as a result of these actions.

It is important to remind residents that these items cannot be broken down or digested like toilet paper in the sewage pipes. They snag and catch other debris, grease and form a ball-like build-up and cause a system failure in the sewage flow, then spill onto the streets and homes thus causing environmental health hazards. Such items should be disposed of in trash bins – not flushed down the toilet. Only toilet paper should be flushed off after use.

As with recent cases in Senwabarwana, the Municipality must then move with speed to unblock the system, manually remove clogs, clean the affected surface and use chemicals to eliminate the stench and repel the flies. CDM however, commends residents who help in reducing the number of sewage unfriendly items.
