CDM PARTICIPATES IN CIRCULAR ECONOMY SUMMIT 2026 TO ADVANCE SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT

Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) participated in the three-day Circular Economy Summit 2026, which commenced on 14 October at the University of Limpopo’s Turfloop Campus, bringing together government, municipalities, academics, industry stakeholders, entrepreneurs and young people to explore how waste could be transformed into economic opportunities.

Hosted by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), the summit was held under the theme “Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders: Advancing the Circular Economy Through Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Research and Collaboration.”

The summit focused on promoting sustainable waste management, recycling, innovation, research, entrepreneurship and job creation. It provided a platform for stakeholders to share knowledge, explore funding opportunities and identify practical solutions to South Africa’s waste management challenges.

A key focus was the circular economy approach, which encourages the reduction, reuse, repair and recycling of materials to minimise waste and keep valuable resources in use for as long as possible. Rather than treating waste solely as a disposal problem, this approach recognises its potential to become a source of raw materials, new products, business opportunities and employment.

Discussions also addressed the role of municipalities in improving waste collection and service delivery, developing appropriate waste infrastructure, reducing illegal dumping and strengthening partnerships with communities and the private sector. Other priority areas included environmental funding, research and innovation, policy development and support for emerging enterprises in the waste sector.

The summit placed particular emphasis on empowering young people and students to develop innovative solutions and establish businesses within the circular economy. Collaboration between government, universities, industry and communities was identified as an important way to connect research with practical projects, investment and employment opportunities.

For Capricorn District Municipality, participation in the summit provided an opportunity to engage with stakeholders on approaches that could strengthen local waste management, promote environmental awareness and support sustainable development across the district.

The engagement reinforced the importance of collective responsibility in protecting the environment. Through recycling, responsible waste disposal, resource recovery and community participation, residents and businesses can contribute to cleaner settlements while supporting emerging green enterprises.

The Circular Economy Summit 2026 highlighted the need to move beyond discussions towards practical initiatives that deliver measurable environmental and economic benefits. By promoting innovation, partnerships and entrepreneurship, the circular economy offers opportunities to address waste challenges while contributing to local economic development and job creation.
