Suspension of Acting CFO lifted

COUNCIL of the Capricorn District Municipality has lifted the suspension of acting chief financial officer Ms Mariette Venter after she was arbitrarily suspended on charges of misconduct.

During a special council meeting that was held on Wednesday this week, council was of a single mind that suspension was arbitrary and procedurally flawed as it derived from misinterpretation of legislation and of the principle of delegation of powers. As Ms Venter’s suspension was a decision that was taken by (acting) municipal manager, the council sought to correct it and thus resolved to lift the suspension. As with all section 56 managers, the (acting) CFO is appointed by council and any disciplinary decision can only be taken by council, not municipal manager or acting – as set out in the Municipal Systems Act 32 of 2000, section 56.

It was for this reason that council has rescinded the decision and lifted the suspension of Ms Venter and she is now back at work. In the meantime, council will apply its mind on the alleged charges before any determination can be made.
