Student get opportunity to view SONA live

Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) in partnership with Government Communications and Information Services (GCIS) afforded the student at Capricorn FET College an opportunity to view live the State of the Nation Address that was held on 07 February 2019. The SONA was delivered by the President of the Republic of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa.

CDM deployed Chief Whip Cllr Calvin Masoga to speak to the student in support of the programme. Masoga gave a background, purpose and the importance of SONA in the government calendar. The 2019 SONA was the last of the current administration. The President used the SONA to layout his priorities for the year ahead.

The SONA was delivered live in Parliament, Cape Town during a joint sitting of the two Houses of Parliament – the National Assembly and National Council of Provinces. It was chaired by both the Speaker of the NA, Mme Baleka Mbete and the Chairperson of the NCOP, Mme Thandi Modise. All the three (3) arms of the State, namely; the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary attended the event. It is one of the rare moments whereby all three Arms of the State meet in one place.

The SONA is one of the important ceremonies of the state. It was broadcasted live on national television in order to afford the public an opportunity to get first-hand information on the priorities of government and its programme of Action for the year ahead direct from the President.

The Programme of Action is government’s plans for the country and people of South Africa. By being aware of what government is doing, everyone can become involved and also take part in government’s plans to build a better life for all. The theme for this year’s event is: “Following up on our commitments: Making Your Future Work Better”.

During the SONA, the President addressed the nation as both the Head of State and Head of Government. The student came in numbers to view the broadcast live.
