Send-off session for Comrade Marathon Athletes

Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) in partnership with Polokwane Municipality and Department of Sport, Arts and Culture hosted a “send-off” session for Comrades Marathon athletes at Peter Mokaba stadium today.

The session took place a day after CDM had a successful Council meeting that approved and adopted the 2017/18 IDP and Budget. The council was held at Mohodi   Community Hall in Molemole Local Municipality. “We are proud to announce that part of the commitments we made to people of this District is to expand our 4 in 1 February Marathon which majority of you supported and participated early this year. We will be mobilising for more resources to ensure that the 2018 edition becomes bigger and better, and with your support it’s all possible” said Executive Mayor of CDM Cllr John Mpe.

“This send-off gathering represents our success in cultivating the spirit, flair and the love of running the game. We have, through these athletes – sustain the sense of unity among runners more especially since February where we hosted more than 3000 athletes. We commend these athletes for playing and sweating out throughout the day as they get ready for the big distance of comrade marathon. We also thank the supports and sponsors for embracing this these athletes from the very beginning to this day”.

“We want to extend our gratitude for the support they have shown to all marathons that were hosted in this Province, in particular Mapungubwe 3 in 1 Marathon in Seshego, and Mayors race hosted by Polokwane Municipality”. The Executive Mayor alluded to the fact that “CDM found it proper to come together as three tiers of Government to appreciate this support in this brief session, and share a meal with yourself and extending wishes to athletes”.

“CDM commits to play its role in public-private partnership to ensure that Sports Program in the District are well resourced financially. Plans are underway to launch Mayoral Intervention Fund that will uplift those in turmoil and the needy. We are also pleased to announce that the 2017 National Mandela Day will be held here in Capricorn District and the participation of athletes will be highly appreciated, details will be communicated to you in due course” he said.

“The success goes to show that we are indeed turning the tide in sporting development. We are turning our attention to developing sport and this athlete’s send-off programme is the one of more programmes to come in nurturing sporting talents especially in codes that have mass participation appeal. We have seen that in February this year and also in other marathon hosted by our sister municipalities”.

“We also acknowledge that in rural areas, the absence of sport and recreation facilities rank as one of the cruellest legacies of the past. This kind of sport has not yet filtered down to our rural communities. We need to ensure that when we speak of “living healthy life style”, it is happening in those part of the country also. I would call it rural marathon. Sports is able to build social cohesion and promote a healthy lifestyle” concluded Executive Mayor.
