Cllr Monica Mohale elected the new Speaker of Council for Capricorn District Municipality. Cllr Mohale was elected the new speaker after the resignation of the then speaker Mme Nakedi Lekganyane who is now a member of the Limpopo Legislature.
The election of the new speaker took place during a council meeting held on 23 May 2019 in CDM Council Chamber. The council proceedings for the election of the new speaker were led by the Accounting Officer Ms Nokuthula Mazibuko.
The election of the speaker was done in accordance with Chapter 3 of the Local Government Municipal Structures Act 1998) which states that each municipal council must have a chairperson who will be called the speaker. At its first sitting after its election or when necessary to fill a vacancy a municipal council must elect its speaker from among the councillors. The municipal manager of the municipality or if the municipal manager is not available a person designated by the MEC for local government in the province, presides over the election of a speaker.
Cllr Mohale was elected the speaker, after receiving more votes against Cllr Botha. Mogale accepted her new role adding that it is a daunting task but she was prepared for the journey ahead. She cited the importance of working together as a council to enable able her to execute her duties diligently.
Cllr Mohale served as the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) responsible for Infrastructure. She was also the Mayor of Molemole Local Municipality before joining to Capricorn District Municipality.
The Executive Mayor Cllr John Mpe congratulated Cllr Mohale for her new role as the speaker of council. He reiterated their trust in her capabilities given the experience in leadership positions.
The opposition parties in council the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the Democratic Alliance (DA), both congratulated Cllr Mohale on her new role as the speaker of council and reminded her that at all times she must apply the roles of council without fear or favour.
