On 04 March 2021, the Finance Portfolio Committee of Capricorn District Municipality visited Mathibela Village in Lepelle-Nkumpi to monitor progress on the Mathibela Water Supply Project.
This is part of the committee’s responsibility to look into water cost recovery projects which have a potential to generate revenue for the municipality. Mathibela is divided into in six phases with six boreholes, three functional and three non-functional.
“It is important that we look at projects that can generate revenue for the municipality however, we should ensure that our communities receive water constantly”, said Finance Portfolio Committee Cllr Mapula Phoshoko.
“We have to ensure that our infrastructure is well to ensure that we collect revenue from those who receive water. The revenue will go a long way towards sustainability of service being rendered to the community”, said MMC for Finance Cllr Blanco Boloka.
Some of the challenges faced in the area include illegal connections, vandalism, non metered households and removed meter. “This posses a serious challenge to our infrastructure. We need to engage relevant departments and stakeholders including the ward councilor to ensure that these challenges are gradually addressed”, said Chairperson.
The project visit was as well attended by Ward Councilor for Ward 8 Cllr Jack Ledwaba, contractors, pump operator, project steering committee member and ward committee.
