Following the circulation of a social media video alleging that residents of Motsana Village in Mafefe, within the Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality, are without water, the Executive Mayor of Capricorn District Municipality, Cllr Mamedupi Teffo, conducted a site visit to verify the authenticity of the claims. The Executive Mayor was accompanied by MMC Cllr Sammy Selamolela and Ward Councillor Mphofela of Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality. The delegation met with the traditional leader (Ntona) and members of the community to assess the situation firsthand.
The visit established that the village currently receives water from a borehole and a natural spring that flows throughout the day. The spring water is clean, captured at source, and reticulated to the community. The assessment found that the spring provides sufficient water to meet the needs of the village, contrary to the claims made in the circulating social media video.
However, the inspection identified the protection of the natural spring as the primary concern. Measures are required to safeguard the spring from contamination and ensure the long-term sustainability and quality of the water supply.
Executive Mayor Cllr Mamedupi Teffo welcomed the findings and committed that Capricorn District Municipality will revisit the area to develop a plan for the protection of the spring and the reconstruction of the mini catchment.
This intervention will be undertaken in partnership with the Department of Water and Sanitation to secure the community’s water source for future generations.
The traditional leader (Moshate) expressed appreciation for the Executive Mayor’s swift response and thanked her delegation for taking the concerns of the community seriously and conducting an immediate on-site assessment.
