The project, implemented at a total cost of R36,491,882.58 (VAT inclusive), commenced on 02 February 2023 and reached completion in October 2024. The contractor, Mmakoto Business Enterprise, worked under the guidance of Maloka Consulting Engineers to deliver critical water infrastructure to this growing community.
The scope of works included, Installation of bulk water pipelines and reticulation network covering more than 29 km, Construction of a 464KL elevated steel tank for water storage, Equipping and electrification of five boreholes, each with mono pumps, pump houses, and fencing and Connection of 1,950 households to the new water network.
Initially, the project included a Reverse Osmosis (RO) water treatment package. However, updated groundwater test results confirmed that the borehole water met safe consumption standards, making treatment unnecessary. The allocated funds were redirected to expand pipeline capacity and household connections.
The project achieved practical completion in July 2024, with final snag-list items concluded by October 2025. During the initial operation phase, some areas reported inconsistent water supply. A geo-hydrological study confirmed that the challenge was operational in nature and recommended a managed pumping schedule to allow sustainable aquifer recovery.
To strengthen supply, one of the most productive boreholes was re-equipped with a resized pump at a deeper level, which has now restored full operational capacity.
One borehole remains non-operational due to a transformer incorrectly installed by Eskom at the wrong location, despite payment and application by the contractor. While engagements with Eskom are ongoing, the municipality has introduced a short-term solution by linking the affected borehole to a nearby operational one to ensure continued water supply.
Executive Mayor Cllr. Mamedupi Teffo reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment, “This project is more than infrastructure – it is about dignity, health, and opportunity for nearly 2,000 households in Taaibosch. We remain determined to resolve the outstanding technical issues and ensure that every family benefits from this vital service.”
The successful handover of the Taaibosch Water Supply Project reflects Capricorn District Municipality’s dedication to sustainable development and improving the quality of life in its communities.
