Congratulations to Polokwane for scooping the Greenest Municipality award



Capricorn District Municipality would like to congratulate Polokwane Local Municipality for scooping the greenest municipality award in South Africa yesterday, 29 August 2017. This came after the Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Barbara Thomson announced municipality as the greenest municipality in South Africa at an award event held in Bloemfontein in the Free State Province. The municipality won both the district and provincial chapters of the competition.  


Polokwane municipality won an amount of R3.5 million which will be given through funding of infrastructure projects aimed at the protection of the environment. “The Executive Mayor Cllr Thembi Nkadimeng said the announcement only gives the municipality more work and pressure to ensure that the status is retained. The community can support us by keeping the downtown area at the taxi ranks clean as we will be embarking on cleaning campaigns and CBD revitalization projects.”


The Panel of Adjudicators have spent sufficient time at each participating municipality to ensure adequate coverage of all areas of the competition. Polokwane was assessed on areas that included Waste Management, Energy Efficiency and Conservation, Water Management, Landscaping, Tree Planting and Beautification, Public Participating and Community Empowerment, Leadership and Institutional Arrangements Presentation.
