“As the District Municipality, we have a responsibility to work with other stakeholders in ensuring that the elderly are cared for as the vulnerable members of society, and are protected from harm and indignity, so they can live in peaceful homes and enjoy their elderly age, free from abuse, free from rape and any form of violence against them,” said the acting Executive Mayor who is a Member of Mayoral Committee for Sports, Arts and Culture at CDM Cllr. Makgalemele Makhura.
Cllr. Makhura was adding Capricorn District Municipality’s voice as she was speaking during the district older persons Gender Based Violence awareness event at Ga-Seakamela in Blouberg Municipality.
The municipality was working together with South African Social Security Agency, Older Persons Forum, Age in Action, Office of the Premier, Office of the Public Protector, Department of Social Development and others to fight GBV against older persons.
The community declared that enough is enough with the abuse meted to the elderly. A drama was performed depicting how the elderly are abused in their daily lives at their homes.
