CDM organised a comrade marathon athletes send-off

Capricorn District Municipality organised a Comrade Marathon Athletes Send-off held on 01 June 2019 at Peter Mokaba Stadium. CDM is the only municipality that has been supporting comrade runners by availing transport from Polokwane to Durban to enable runners to participate in the race.

“We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to CDM for this send-off gesture. We would appreciate to come back and show you how we have performed as we carry the district flag high”, said Coach Lufuno representing the comrade marathon athletes adding that they appreciate immensely the support that has been given to the runners. Representing the sport confederations in the district Mr Kakata Maponyane appealed to the athletes to go and represent the district well and make it proud. “You must come back with gold medals”, said Maponyane.

Coach Lufuno bragged about the calibre of runners they have and the intense preparations they have engaged in for the race. He added that amongst the people that will be in the bus to Durban was 77 year old Mr Johannes Mosehla who is one of the oldest comrade runners from the Limpopo province. Mosehla hails from Ga-Mogashoa in Sekhukhune and has been participating in the CDM 4-IN-1 Marathon. There was also Mr Sebati who has run the comrade marathon for 22 consecutive years.

Speaking to the athletes, Executive Mayor Cllr John Mpe said, “I want Capricorn District to add Mr Mosehla as an ambassador of our 4-in-1 Marathon, it is people like him that shows that age is nothing but a number. We should not hide behind age when we have to join in the health journey that can prolong our life expectancy”.

“Each and everyone of you must be an ambassador during this comrade Marathon. I want you to recruit runners from other provinces to come and participate in the CDM 4-in-1 marathon,” said the Executive Mayor. “You are all winners, this is the kind of a lifestyle that we should encourage in our communities,” added the Executive Mayor.

“We have bus driver who have been consistent participating in the CDM 4-IN-1 marathon, Mr Maropeng Mojela and Lucas Seleka. We extend our word of appreciation to our bus drivers for the work they do for runners on the road. Their main aim is to encourage, this bus driver system is really encouraging as one does run in his or her own pace. It is about reaching the finish line not killing yourselves”, said the Executive Mayor.

“We wish you well in this race. This year we have the biggest delegation that we send-off to comrade marathon.  We will always support you and we thank you for always supporting our programmes also. We welcome all athletes in the province in our district. We wish you all the best in your comrades marathon journey, bring us something special and you will see what we can do for you, goodluck to all of you,” concluded the Executive Mayor.
