Capricorn District Municipality (CDM), represented by the MMC for Development Planning and Environmental Management Services, Cllr. Makgato Machaba, joined the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Buti Manamela, and other dignitaries at the fourth annual Heritage Careers Expo 2026, held at Capricorn TVET College’s Seshego Campus on 09 October 2026.
The expo aimed to demonstrate how South Africa’s cultural heritage could be transformed into career, skills development, entrepreneurship and employment opportunities for young people. It attracted learners who explored pathways into the cultural, creative and heritage industries.
Held under the theme “Heritage to Wealth: Turning Culture into Careers,” the expo highlighted opportunities in fields such as fashion, music, dance, visual arts, hospitality, crafts and other creative industries. It encouraged young people to look beyond conventional career choices and recognise how their talents, cultural knowledge and interests could be developed into sustainable livelihoods.
The initiative also highlighted the role of technical and vocational education and training institutions in equipping young people with practical skills relevant to the creative economy. Through career exposure and engagement with industry stakeholders, learners were encouraged to explore training opportunities that could help them turn their passions into professional careers and business ventures.
The Heritage Careers Expo further emphasised the economic value of preserving and promoting South Africa’s diverse cultural heritage. Heritage-related industries can contribute to tourism, local enterprise development and job creation while ensuring that cultural traditions, artistic expression and indigenous knowledge continue to be appreciated by future generations.
For Capricorn District Municipality, participation in the expo provided an opportunity to support initiatives that connect young people with skills development and economic opportunities. Investing in young people’s talents and capabilities is important in building a skilled workforce and promoting inclusive local economic development across the district.
The expo reinforced the message that heritage is not only a reflection of the past but also a resource for innovation, entrepreneurship and future prosperity.
