Capricorn District Municipality hosted a successful women’s parliament during a session held on 15 August 2019 at Lebowakgomo Civic Centre in Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality. The parliament is part of the activities scheduled in celebration of women’s month.
The session commenced with election of the Speaker for the day presided by the Speaker of CDM Council Cllr Maite Mogale. During the process, Mavis Mashoene from Ga-Mphahlele was elected as the Speaker of CDM’s 2019 Women Parliament. Mashoene’s responsibility was to drive the women’s parliament debate session.
Women from different political parties debated different motions touching on issues affecting women in the district. Political parties were represented in terms of the current political parties representation in the council of CDM.
The Motions debated were:
1. Women, domestic and public violence and its effects on communities;
2. Women and municipalities rising up against unemployment;
3. Rehabilitation and development of women ex-prisoners;
4. Advancing women development agenda through skills development in pursuit of 4th industrial revolution.
Cllr Jara Masubelele was speaking on behalf of the Executive Mayor of CDM Cllr. John Mpe. Addressing women in attendance Cllr Masubelele said “CDM is humbled by the resolve and dedication to the cause of the emancipation of women and the work done to change the life circumstances of people. There is no doubt that these efforts will help accelerate the advance towards achievement of goals for a better life”.
Resolutions taken during the parliament will be forwarded to local municipalities for implementation.
