Capricorn District Municipality, in Partnership with the Department of Social Development Limpopo – DSD Area Social Worker, hosted an Alzheimer’s Awareness event at the Grootdraai Agriculture Office in the Blouberg Local Municipality.The session aimed at raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease, educating the elderly and community members on early detection of the disease and promoting access to support services for affected families.
The awareness held on 30 September 2025, was part of the municipality’s Older Person’s support programme within the Special Focus Unit. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, and is the most common form of dementia.
Early symptoms often include difficulty remembering recent events, while later symptoms can involve confusion, mood changes, and trouble with daily tasks, eventually leading to a loss of independence. While there is no cure, treatments aim to slow progression and manage symptoms.
