DISTRICT WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DAY COMMEMORATED

Capricorn District Municipality joined communities in observing World Environmental Health Day on 11 September 2026, with the district commemoration held at Ga-Rakgwatha, Zebediela, under Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality.

The commemoration was led by the Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for Community Services, Cllr Elizabeth Rahlana, and was held under the 2026 theme: “Environmental Health: Standing with Science to Protect Communities.”

World Environmental Health Day highlights the important role of environmental health in protecting people from environmental risks and creating cleaner, safer and healthier communities. Environmental health encompasses issues such as safe water and sanitation, waste management, food safety, pollution control, healthy living environments and the prevention of environmental conditions that may contribute to disease.

The theme emphasises the importance of using science, research and reliable evidence to guide environmental health interventions. Evidence-based approaches enable authorities and communities to better identify environmental risks, develop appropriate responses and implement measures that protect public health.

The commemoration also provided an opportunity to raise awareness about the shared responsibility of government, communities and other stakeholders in maintaining healthy environments. Simple actions such as proper waste disposal, responsible water use, maintaining clean surroundings and reporting environmental health risks can contribute significantly to community wellbeing.

Through its environmental health programmes, Capricorn District Municipality continues to promote awareness and support initiatives that contribute to healthier people, safer environments and sustainable communities.
